DIY Mini Christmas Tree using Real Branches

Upcycling Christmas: DIY Mini Trees from Recycled Branches

This year, we decided to embrace sustainability and creativity by crafting our own Christmas decorations using recycled materials. We took advantage of discarded tree branches from our local Christmas tree lot and transformed them into adorable mini Christmas trees for our front porch.

To create these festive ornaments, we gathered the following supplies from Michael's:

Small pots

floral foam

Small Christmas trees

Ornaments

Glitter

Once we had our supplies, we simply potted the small trees in the pots, decorated them with ornaments and glitter, and voila! We had two charming, eco-friendly Christmas decorations. Not only did we reduce waste, but we also added a personal touch to our holiday décor.

Step 1: Cut Tree Branches to preferred size

To start, I clipped a bunch of branches and trimmed them to various sizes.  I knew I would need the branches to decrease in size as I went up my trees, so I planned for that.

Step 2: Building the Tree Base

Starting with the larger floral foam cone, I used a kebab skewer to create holes for the branches. While some of the sturdier branches could be inserted directly into the foam, others required a pre-made hole.

Inspired by Amanda's DIY Christmas Tree Cones, I opted to avoid using hot glue on the foam, as it can be messy and less effective. Instead, I found that the branches held firmly in place without additional adhesive.

Step 3: Shaping the Tree

Once I'd filled the cone with branches, I took a step back to assess the shape. It was looking a bit bushy, so I grabbed my gardening pruners and started trimming. I carefully snipped away at the branches, shaping the tree into a more desirable form. It was a bit of a surprise to use gardening tools for this project, but it worked perfectly!

With the first tree complete, I started on the second one. This time, I was more mindful of the branch sizes, choosing smaller ones to create a more refined shape. Even so, I still needed to do some final pruning to achieve the desired look.

Step 4: Choosing the Perfect Pot

With my trees trimmed and ready, it was time to find the perfect containers. Unfortunately, the cute Christmas buckets I had seen online were sold out. Undeterred, I decided to repurpose items I already had at home. I chose a small tin bucket and a mason jar, both of which I knew I could decorate with ribbon and burlap to match the festive theme.

Step 5: Adding the Finishing Touches

Originally, I planned to create paper stars for the tops of my trees. However, considering the outdoor placement, I realized that string lights would be a more durable and festive option. I wrapped the trees with mini string lights, adding a warm and inviting glow. With this final touch, my DIY Christmas trees were ready to brighten up my front porch!
